Description
This statue, probably destined for a burial, is of an old man with highly realistic facial features wearing a short, tight toga exigua of the type worn in the Republic era. The small cylindrical cist just visible in the front, accentuate the appearance of a stele in the lower part of the statue. The treatment of the head, almost cubic, and the schematic representation of the eyes and strong-willed expression of the mouth hark back to Eutruscan-Italic art in the II century BC, while the complicated folds of the gown suggest it is a datable to the first half of the following century (90-60 BC).
