Peter D. Boborykin (1836-1921), creator of the Russian word `intellectual`, author of the popular novels: `Dealers`, `China town`, `Vasily Terkin` and many others, was `a European not only in manners, habits, education level and the familiarity with foreign life, but European in the best sense of the word, who was serving life the highest ideals of human culture, without national, tribal and religious exclusivity. Thoughtful responsiveness to the topic of the day... requires a great deal of observation. And this quality Boborykin possessed in the highest degree. Society at the moment, the costumes, the nature of the conversations, the changes of fashion, everyday tastes, atmosphere, customs, amusements and habits... the Russian people at home and abroad depicted them with amusing precision and detail`.
