This statue originally belonged to Domenico Biondo, a butler of Pope Paul V Borghese. It entereed th Scipione Borghese collection in 1806. The wings, arms and legs of Eros (once claled the Genius Borghese), are modern adaptions. In the eighteenth century it was particularly popular with Winckelmann, a German art historian and archaeologist who pioneered in Hellenistic works, articulating the difference between Greek, Greco-Roman and Roman art. As of today the piece is considered one of the seven most important pieces of the Borghese collection acquired by France.
