Description
The portrait head of a man of mature age is set on a serpentine bust. The portrait, made of dark marble, is characterized by a thin mouth and nasolabial folds that suggest the character's mature age, overall the face recalls the portraits of Tiberius. The rigid execution of the face strongly contrasts with the rendering of the bust, which made in a more synthetic way, presents a sheen that clashes with the opaque and porous marble used for the head. The use of marbles of different colors and qualities and the inconsistencies in the rendering of the lorica also suggest that the piece was made in modern times.
