Agannon, The Undying King
The dark arts of necromancy can lead one on the path to the most unnatural form of immortality, the path to lichdom.
A once proud and exemplar wizard was recognized by the self proclaimed King of Gods himself - The Arcane Lord, Aurik. Agannon proved himself to be a worthy pupil and his terrible need for power would eventually lead him to become the first lich.
Betraying Aurik's trust, he delved deep into the dark arts. He found the terrible rituals that could split his soul and eventually lead to a powerful form of immortality- lichdom. This grand betrayal was discovered too late, as Agannon had already shattered his own soul to create multiple phylacteries to house his soul for an eternity.
Agannon truly went as far as one could go down this path, slaying multiple Valkyrie for his dark rituals. It wasn't enough satiate his lust for power, he believed that a truly divine soul would fuel the most powerful of phylacteries.
He knew he would be no match for Aurik's magic at this point, so he instead opted to sacrifice one of his daughters for the final division of his soul.
After the ritual took the life his daughter, Aurik attempted to destroy what was left of the dark wizard. To truly destroy a lich, you must eradicate all fragments of their soul that have been bound to phylacteries. Agannon had hidden his phylacteries beyond the sight of Aurik. Unable to truly put an end to the undying Agannon, he created a prison deep within the earth. Upon this unholy domain he would build a massive necropolis.
Working with all the of the realms, they created a pact to keep Agannon imprisoned forever.
The great conclave of metallic dragons sent Kalvarys of their bronze kin.
Mankind chose Velika, a powerful sorceress to stand vigilant against the darkness below.
The great paladin Wolfram of Oberon pledged an oath to accompany her to the end of their duty. An order of paladins would accompany him to assist their new leader and would eventually become a dark order of bloodhunters.
The Valkyrie could not stand idle as their kin were slain for ill gain, so they sent Astrid to stand guard before the doors of Agannon's domain beyond the labyrinth below.
The giants refused to take any part in the mistakes of Aurik. This was a terror of his own arrogance and he should suffer the consequences.
