3D model description

Make your own aerospace-inspired hard drive rack!

Inspired by the structural panels commonly found in both aircraft and spacecraft, this design uses a modified isogrid pattern to connect all of the important nodes across the exterior of the shell and to create a very robust and visually striking hard drive enclosure that feels like it came straight out of the Perseverance Rover, the Dragon Capsule, or an F35.

This particular design is intended to hold 4x 2.5in drives. Itโ€™s compatible with both solid state and hard disk drives, and supports drives that are up to 12.5mm in height (the most common ones).

In this download you will find one fine-meshed, ready-to-print STL file along with a bill of materials that specs all of the necessary ancillary components (with McMaster links) and provides some additional information pertinent to production and assembly.

Looking for something that holds more drives? Want to make one for 3.5in drives instead? We've got those too! You can also get the whole family if you have a whole lot of drives to mount. Find the other models by navigating to our profile. Check out our other models while you're at it!

Troubleshooting:

If your slicer software doesnโ€™t automatically interpret the correct units / scale try scaling by 25.4% (if it imports really small) or 0.0393701% (if it imports really big).

3D printing settings

At 0.03โ€ (0.8mm) thick throughout, this enclosure was made to be printed using a 0.4mm nozzle with normal settings, but to imitate Single Outline Corkscrew Mode (Vase Mode) to create a dual perimeter, incredibly lightweight, but surprisingly strong enclosure (even if made out of your run of the mill PLA). It can also be made with a variety of other materials and methods, however, be aware that if printing with SLA, it will require a lot of meticulous support placement and cleanup. Tolerances are snug so some minor sanding and adjusting may be required if you get a lot of zits or blobs, otherwise the drives should slot right into place.
