The Best FIFA is an individual award, which FIFA decided to create in 2016, with the aim of recognizing the best players in the world each season.1 The award is given along with several others such as Best Coach at the body's annual gala known as The Best FIFA Football Awards (in English, The Best FIFA Football Awards).23

The award appears in replacement of the FIFA Ballon d'Or (in French, FIFA Ballon d'Or) which was an individual award, created on July 5, 2010, and was awarded annually to the best soccer player in the world.4 This award was the result of the unification between the Ballon d'Or -given by France Football magazine- and the FIFA World Player of the Year -given by FIFA. The new FIFA award is determined by the votes of the captains and coaches of all the national teams of each of the FIFA-affiliated federations on the five continents, in addition to those of specialist journalists and fans (unlike the Ballon d'Or, which is the sole preserve of specialist journalists).
