Critters is a horror and suspense film released on April 11, 1986; It is the first film in the Critters saga. The film begins by showing a space station that functions as a prison. A group of creatures called Critters (not shown on screen) are being transported to another station. However, the creatures manage to escape by stealing a spaceship from the station, the leader of the place must hire two bounty hunters, as the bounty hunters were created to have metamorphosis ability to capture the Critters.

Meanwhile on planet Earth, the Brown family leads a quiet life in a rural Kansas town; the father, Jay; the mother, Helen; teenage daughter, April; and youngest son, Brad. Brad often spends his time with his father's mechanical assistant, Charlie, and also has a hobby of making homemade explosives. When Jay and Helen are out, Charlie accidentally hits April with a slingshot and Brad, looking to keep his friend out of trouble, pretends to be responsible for the incident. Although he is sent to his room as punishment, he manages to sneak up to the roof and from there to a tree. From there he sees a comet cross the sky until it falls nearby, producing a great noise. Jay leaves the house to investigate and finds his son in the tree, deciding to go together to investigate where the comet fell.
