Elven mastery of arcane arts has enabled them to use magical portals to cross huge distances, from one end of the world to the other, or even across the gaping void of space to reach other planets or to enter other planes of existence.
Those portals are built to last eons, and to survive even magical or elemental catastrophe. Sometimes they are found by human explorers in some otherwise inaccessible part of deep woods or atop of a mountain and sometimes foolish adventurers find a way to activate those elfgates that lead to only gods know where.
