Description
The Torlonia crater, from the Torlonia collection exhibited at the Capitoline Museums, has an exclusively naturalistic decoration along the perimeter, as in some Greek specimens, which, to the representation of the human figure, replaced elements taken from the animal and plant world. Large acanthus leaves, with well-engraved veins, graft onto a background of pods.
The fluted handles and the oval decoration along the upper edge elegantly define the decoration that runs around the surface of the chalice vase. Of the six figures in the Dionysian procession, this portrayed from behind gracefully advances, holding a flowery crown.
