Golden Ratio Seahorse Gears

animated gif

Inspired by Nautilus Gears by MishaT:

http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:27233

Update 9/8/14:

I added a new smooth running seahorse gear version (v3). The new version does not latch into a closed position and is suitable to drive

with a motor, etc.

To clarify, choose the version of the gear based on desired action.

Gear v2 - Latching

Gear v3 - Smooth running

Enjoy!

Update 6/9/14:

Added DXF files, so hopefully people with laser cutters can try this out too.

Update: 2/27/14:

New Version (2.1) of the arm. I replaced the pins with simple holes. Use raw 1.75mm filament for the pins/rivets, using the methods described here for using rivets as hinges. Look at the section titled 'USING FILAMENT TO MAKE SOLID RIVETS AND HINGES' towards the end of the article :

http://makezine.com/projects/make-34/skill-builder-finishing-and-post-processing-your-3d-printed-objects/

I used a lighter instead of a heat gun. It's quite easy and much stronger than a printed pin.

Update 2/26/14:

New Version with stronger pins.... is a failure. Pins do not mate properly. I have a new vetted design with a simpler pin made from a raw filament 'rivet'. I'll post updated files and instructions on 2/27/14

Update 2/26/14: New Version with (hopefully) stronger pins.

Units are now in Metric.

3D printing settings

Print two identical gears and one Left & Right side arm.

For a nice texture use 'Hilbert Curve' for the first and last layer of the seahorse gears.

Note:

The 'assembled' file is not set up to print in place. It is for visual reference only.
