This beautifully rendered butterfly suncatcher looks as amazing in print as it does in 3D modeling software. It makes a fantastic decoration in any window or lawn and garden decor.
It's incredibly versatile, visually stunning front and back, and capable of scaling from 50% to 150% and beyond. At 100% scale, it's an impressive 19.85 x 20.34cm (7.5 x 8.0in). I've printed it as large as 150% scale (requires larger printer for the frames - I used 400x400 Anycubic Kobra Max) and it came out perfect.
Each color piece prints separately and drops snuggly into its position on the frame for no-mistake easy assembly. There are 10 pieces in all - the top, bottom, and 8 color pieces. The inside "color" pieces are made ultra-thin (0.32mm) to mimic the translucency of stained glass. You can mix and match colors however you like. Have fun with it! And please upload your makes, we would absolutely love to see them!
ASSEMBLY (Glue Required)
Print out all 10 pieces:
Bottom Frame (x1)
Top Frame (x1)
Bottom Color 1 (Single x2, or Double x1)
Bottom Color 2 (Single x2, or Double x1)
Top Color 1 (Single x2, or Double x1)
Top Color 2 (Single x2, or Double x1)
Lay the Bottom Frame down with raised edges facing up. Insert the colored pieces into the appropriate slots. They only fit one way, and should fit perfectly into their slots, so you really can't mess this up. They are sized for easy printing and should fit perfectly, but if necessary, a bit of sanding will do the trick. Finally, add glue (I recommend E6000) and place the Top Frame over the assembled parts, making sure to line it up perfectly. Allow plenty of time to dry. I suggest using clips, clothes pins, or small clamps, or placing a heavy, flat object on top to ensure it glues together nice and tight.
HOW TO HANG
The butterfly can be hung by attaching a string - I recommend either black string or clear fishing line - around the head and tail. Tie it close to the body, with the knot closer to the head end than the tail. Then leave enough extra string (8 to 10 inches) to hang it from. This will cause the butterfly to tilt at an upward angle. It looks more realistic and catches the sunlight beautifully.
SILHOUETTE
As an added bonus, you can print out just the "Top" piece of the butterfly and use it as a wall decoration. I suggest scaling the Z up to 150%-200%, as the original 1.5mm will be very thin.
Enjoy!
