3D model description

Designed up this remix of The Orbiter V1.5 just to brake the barrier of getting the spider shaft.

This design also uses a self printed 75T gear (filament used may/will matter I will go for POM when I have a capable printer and will try ASA shortly but for now I will give PLA a chance). EDIT: Now up and running on test bench ;)

I will use epoxy glue to fix the gear to a 8 mm carbon fiber tube that is commonly found in many RC hobby stores i Europe.

Part from the 4 STL's to print you will need this hardware BOM
# = For original Orbiter V1.5 and not needed for this remix.
* = New hardware needed for this remix.

1 x LDO-36STH17-1004AHG or LDO-36STH20-0504AHG 36mm Stepper (Or equivalent)
1 x 8mm drive shaft Dual drive gear extruder kit for 1.75mm filament Trianglelab Blurolls
1 x Mini bearing MR148-ZZ
1 x Mini bearing F688ZZ

Not needed in this remix: 3 x Mini bearings MR85ZZ

1 x Thumbscrew assembly (Or just a spring, washer and a suitable M3 screw).
1 x Insert M3 L4mm nut
2 x M3 screw L = 18mm + 2 washers
1 x M3 L= 22mm shaft for the latch
5 x M2 L= 6mm for the gear cover. (Or skip this so save a few grams).

Not needed in this remix: 1x Aluminium spider shaft - (version for 7.5:1 gearing ratio)

  • Needed for this remix 33mm Carbon fiber tube (or aluminum or steel). 1x Optional pneumatic coupling for 6mm PTFE tube with M6 thread

Build notes:
Use a 3.2/3.5mm drill bit to open up the motor mount holes a bit to allow for some gear freeplay adjustments start with one of the holes and open them up gradually until everything runs smooth.

Some running in time might(will) be necessary to get printed gears to bead in.

For the gear housing cover use some small drills to open up the holes to allow the M2 screws to make their own threads without excessive force (Just some friction so they will stay in place).

More info files and changes might follow so keep looking back.

Latest updates:
Jig for gluing the gear and shaft together straight (Gear+shaft-assembly-jig.stl)
Also a spacer for the hotend mount to make the filament path straight. "Hot-end-shim.stl" 02 AUG 21
New 75T Gear with improved tooth profile 18 JUL 21
Modified idler gear lever (Latch) for engine screw head clearance 19 JUL 21
.step files uploaded for they who want to thinker ;) 19 JUL 21

Fusion36 files: https://grabcad.com/library/the-orbiter-v1-5-extruder-single-gear-version-1
Changed the name to avoid confusion (I'm no sure there was any).

Added:
Two Trees Sapphire Pro direct extruder mount/interface. (Note you need to shim the hot end/fan bracket 1 mm to get a straight filament path this also involves end stop adjustments). REF "Sapphire-pro-interface.stl"

A few more files named ...hex.stl and ....hex.stp where inserts are substituted with hex nuts. Those are not tested by me so I'm not 100% sure they will work.
Please report back.

Please let me know if you make any other mounts for this version of The Orbiter
