3D model description

Foldable Chess and Backgammon board that closes in a box, allowing you to store the included pawns within. The board is designed to lay flat while open.

This Chess/ Backgammon board was designed with three goals in mind: 1) I don't have a printer that can print different colored filaments, 2) I don't like huge prints that take hours to complete all at once only to find out that something messed up and you have to reprint everything again, and 3) I hate supports (😊). The horse pawn is the only part that may require supports (depending on your machine and slicer settings), however you can avoid using supports by enabling the "make overhangs printable" setting in Cura.

STEPS :

A) What to print:

1) the two pieces that comprise the board,
2) 32 black squares and 32 white squares,
3) the chess pawns (8 Black/8 White Soldiers, 2 Black/2 White Bishops, 2 Black/2 White Towers, 2 Black/2 White Horses, 1 Black/1 White King, and 1 Black/1 White Queen) and 15 Black/White backgammon pieces,
4) the latch,
5) the backgammon extension,
6) the triangle inlays for the backgammon extension,
7) the dice.

B) Assembling :

  • Assuming the parts were printed in PLA (which is advised), additional materials for assembly are :

1) ca glue (super-glue),
2) four M3 machine screws (each measuring 25 mm in length),
3) and the accompanying nuts.

  • Start by adhering the chess board squares to each board, being careful to follow the proper chessboard layout. After printing three boards, I can assure you that it is best to glue the squares with one color first, then the other, because the human brain does not like to perform repetitive tasks like a 3D printer...

  • Flip the board over and continue by adhering the backgammon inlays part to the backgammon extension piece (you can’t glue it wrong its designed to fit only in one way). Next, adhere the backgammon extension piece with the inlays glued in it, inside the board.

  • Secure the hinges and the locking mechanism (the latch) with the M3 machine screws (do not overtighten the screws!), you're done.

All the boards and pawns I printed shown in the attached pictures were printed with a 0.6 nozzle at 0.2 layer height.
