3D model description

Disclaimer of liability: This design should be considered experimental. Anything you choose to do with it is at your own risk. I cannot be held responsible for any damage or injury caused. You are furthermore responsible for knowing and abiding by your local laws and regulations.

I put tri-spoke wheels from a Land Rover Freelander on my Saab 9-3, and I needed a way to get Saab center caps on them. The OEM Saab center caps are the correct diameter at the widest point, but the clips/tabs holding them in place are totally different. So I used a Dremel tool to take off the original tabs so I could 3D print replacements.

Most center caps you'll find here on Thingiverse are printed in a single piece flat on the bed with tabs sticking up. I knew that layer orientation would be all wrong, but I tried it anyway, and sure enough, the tabs snapped off along the layer lines.

So I redesigned the tabs to print in three pieces on their sides such that the layer lines are strongest for each tab, and then the three pieces sort of puzzle-box together on the backside of the cap. A bit more convoluted, but it worked perfectly!

I secured them together on the backside of the center cap with JB Weld, but any number of adhesives are likely to work.

If you don't happen to be putting Land Rover wheels on a Saab, you can still feel free to adapt this basic design to whatever specific applications you may need. Just be sure to upload the results as a remix!
