3D model description

Add a touch of gothic elegance to any space with this baroque light shade. It's small enough to fit just about anywhere, but large enough to catch the eye, especially when lit. It works great with an LED, battery-operated candle, or any small LED light source.

[Warning: Do NOT use a real candle or standard light bulb that gets hot - it will melt the model!]

I've designed the Gothic Lamp Shade to be incredibly versatile. It comes with 2 bases and 5 lids. Mix and match, or print multiple pieces and change them out whenever you feel like it. It also comes with an optional Inner Shade, which has multiple advantages (see INNER SHADE FILES below)

2 BASE FILES
There are two base files featuring a Pentacle or Lotus. The symbol you choose to print will be featured on all four sides of an ornate base, with an open bottom for setting over a (heatless) light source.

5 TOP FILES
There are 5 different tops, or lids, to the lamp cover, each featuring a different design with a different meaning. They include:

Pentacle - A pentacle surrounded by the 5 elements, earth, air, water, fire and spirit, in runic lettering.

Lotus - A double-sided lotus flower symbolizing purity and rebirth.

Triple Crescent Moon - Three crescent moons interlocked. For many, these signify the three phases of the female life cycle.

Tree of Life - The roots, trunk, and foliage of the Tree of Life have many meanings across different belief systems. For many, they represent the afterlife and the connection between heaven and earth.

Treskele - The treskele (a.k.a. Treskelion, or Triple Spiral) is a Celtic design, and is believed to be the oldest symbol of spirituality.

INNER SHADE FILES
The light cover alone offers a beautiful way to adorn tables and mantles. However, the inner shade is an added bonus with multiple uses.

If you print it in a light color, such as white or gold, it makes the lamp cover really stand out, even without an LED light inside. To put it simply, the inner shade can make it look like there's a vibrant light within, even when there's not.

It's also capable of changing the color emitted by your LED bulbs. I especially like silk filaments for the inner shade. Pictured above are inner shades in BiNG3D's Gold Silk and iSANGHU's Red/Gold Silk Gradient. They look beautiful when they're not lit, and even more amazing when they are. See the animated-gif-video in the images above to see how beautiful the Red/Gold Silk gleams when lit.

ASSEMBLY - NO INNER SHADE
If you choose not to print the inner shade, assembly is a cinch. Print out one Gothic Lamp Base and one Gothic Lamp Lid. At the top of each corner of the base are pegs. Likewise, at each corner of the lid are four recessed holes. Simply align the holes to the pegs and gently press them into place. You can use glue for a permanent hold, but I don't recommend it. This way you can change lids or add an inner shade anytime.

ASSEMBLY - WITH INNER SHADE
For the whole package, you'll need to print out one Gothic Lamp Base and one Gothic Lamp Lid of your choice. Also, print one Gothic Lamp - Inner Shade Bottom and one Gothic Lamp - Inner Shade Top (See also "Inner Shade Alternative" in 3D Printer Settings).

The inner shade prints thin, only a single layer, and should be very flexible. Carefully bend the sides inward and slip the shade into the lamp base. It should slide right into place and hold without any adhesive.

Next, line up the Inner Shade Top on the bottom of the Gothic Lamp Lid. It doesn't have to be perfect, so long as the symbol is completely covered and the peg holes aren't blocked. You can glue it, or just use a small piece of tape.

DIMENSIONS & LED LIGHTING
When assembled, the Gothic LED Lamp Cover's measurements are:

Outside Dimensions
X = 10.72cm / 4.22in
Y = 10.72cm / 4.22in
Z = 9.72cm / 3.83in

Inside Dimensions
X = 8.0cm / 3.15in
Y = 8.0cm / 3.15in
Z = 9.25cm / 3.64in

It is easily large enough to hold battery-operated Tea Lights and Flameless Votive Candles. If you use smaller tea lights, you can actually fit two of them under the shade for a brighter effect.

3D printing settings

Different settings are recommended for each section of the lamp, as follows:

Gothic Lamp Base
Layer Quality: 0.16
Infill: 15%
Speed: 60mm/s
Supports: No
Plate Adhesion: None

Gothic Lamp Top
Layer Quality: 0.16
Infill: 15%
Top/Bottom Layers: 3
top "Surface" Layers: 2
Speed: 60mm/s
Supports: No
Plate Adhesion: None

Gothic Lamp - Inner Shade Top
This piece is only 0.16mm thick. Set your Layer Quality to 0.16. The rest shouldn't matter. Allow it to cool completely before removing it from the build plate so it doesn't warp.

Gothic Lamp - Inner Shade Bottom
This is the really important one. It must print in only one layer. Otherwise, it will be too thick to bend without cracking, plus it would be very hard to see a light shine through.

The piece is designed to print a single layer at 0.16 Layer Quality. When you set this up in your slicer, preview it to make sure it's only printing a single layer. Unfortunately, not all printers are capable of printing only a single layer in this manner. If you have this problem, I've included a solution.

INNER SHADE ALTERNATIVE FIX: Instead of printing the Inner Shade Bottom, print "Inner Shade Alternative". I strongly recommend Ultimaker Cura Slicer for this. Look for and adjust the following:

In the main list of settings, choose 'Special Modes'. Within this menu, click the drop-down by 'Surface Mode', and set it to 'Surface'. Check the boxes next to 'Spiralize Outer Contour' and 'Smooth Spiralized Contours'. Then print the file. It will force the model to print only the side walls (no top or bottom), and in a single layer. Just make sure to turn these settings off before your next print.
