Praxinoscope by Emile Reynaud - ancestor of the cinema

The praxinoscope was invented in Puy-en-Velay by Emile Reynaud in 1876. Patented in 1877, it was an optical toy giving the illusion of movement and working on the principle of optical compensation. This toy obtained an "honorable mention" at the Paris World Fair of 1878. The praxinoscope is thus at the base of his inventions like the praxinoscope-theater, the praxinoscope projection, the optical theater or stereo-cinema. These last researches aimed to create an animated projection in relief.

The model that you will download is 20 cm in diameter and 15 cm high.

In order to create the rotation and mirror effect, you will need to add:

• 12 squares of 53mmx25,30mm cut from acrylic mirror (available here: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=acrylic+mirror&crid=30RI7AJR5VZFZ&sprefix=acrylic+mirror%2Caps%2C138&ref=nb_sb_noss_1)

• 1 ball bearing of 10mm*30*9mm ( https://www.amazon.com/s?k=10mm*30*9mm+beering+6200&crid=J38NV8E5BTGC&sprefix=10mm+30+9mm+beering+6200%2Caps%2C121&ref=nb_sb_noss) which is placed in the tank, from below. The foot fits into this bearing.

• print the strips "film" (file film-praxinoscope.zip) so that they are of dimensions: 69,5cm*5cm. If you have an A4 printer, print 3 strips of 4 images of you join with tape.

You will be able to create your own movie! Convert small video to GIF format and keep 12 consecutive images.

The whole set can be printed in PLA, PETG or ABS. You can decorate the outside of the tank or the top of the device using copper or wood filament!
