3D model description

The E-32 type locomotives are a type of electric locomotive in which the Chilean State Railways Company ordered the manufacture from Italy in the late 1950s and delivered between 1961 and 1962,1 together with E-302 type locomotives and AMZ/AM railcars through a modernization program of electric traction predominantly by Baldwin-Westinghouse locomotives of the 1920s/40s and Linke Hoffman railcars.3

Arriving in Chile in 2 lots with a total of 34 locomotives, the first engines operated express and ordinary trains between Mapocho (Santiago) and Puerto (Valparaiso) working in conjunction with Baldwin-Westinghouse locomotives which were replaced as time went on.

As the smaller, faster and more agile Bo-Bo type E-30 locomotives arrived, the Type E-32 locomotives moved towards the southern zone as the electric network was extended to Concepción, commanding important longitudinal trains to the south, both passenger and freight.4In the mid 80's the electrification was extended to Metrenco and the E-32 type locomotives were at the head of trains to Chillán, Concepción, Valdivia, Temuco and Puerto Montt (with their respective change of traction in Temuco for Diesel locomotives). It should be noted that after some time in service to Concepción, the entry of these locomotives was prohibited on the San Rosendo - Talcahuano branch line due to problems related to the bogies. This was due to the radius in the curves corresponding to the section.
