Bust of Peggy
Bust of Peggy

A bust of 'Peggy' or Margaret Harrison wearing a lace-edged chemise and an embroidered shawl which is knotted around the pedestal. She was Joseph Mayer's travelling companion. The latter is an unusual feature for a bust sculpture as is the representation of a sitter's arms. Precedents are to be found in late 18th century French works by Barre and Houdon and in certain Roman portrait busts. Fontana employs the device to convey the charm and vitality of his subject.
