3D model description

This engine section is a tester print for the 1/35th scale SR71 Blackbird scale model with stand. I decided to upload it because it's one of the trickier parts to print and a good way to confirm your settings are perfect. If this print OK the other parts will be fine. The complete kit which can be also converted into an LED lamp will be available for sale very soon.

Dimensions of this part are approximately H190mm x W155mm x D125mm but to complete other larger parts in the kit, your printer needs a build volume of at least 200mm x 200mm x 200mm.

I have created STL files that are optimised for single wall printing with specially developed 'inside-out' internal supports to generate stiff and economical parts that require no infill, supports or even finishing or clean up steps, just print and assemble beautiful scale models. A single wall is very quick to print and the total cost of filament for the entire build is less than $20! This approach to designing complex 3D printed parts is still quite uncommon but I believe has huge potential and will continue to improve on it. This SR71kit is based originally on a 3D model by Chris Shakal, an aeronautics engineer and has been used with his kind permission, he has even printed one of these SR71 kits himself.

Check out the video here to see this sample tester part being printed as a single wall in 'vase mode'.

3D printing settings

Part dimensions are 125mm x 150mm x 190mm.

Print bed minimum size is 200mm x 200mm x 200mm.

Nozzle Dia. - 0.4mm

Nozzle Temp. - I set my print head at 218 degrees Celsius for my particular PLA filament. You will have to find your own perfect temp for your filament brand. Although I find transparent filament require slightly higher temps.

Extrusion Multiplier - 102%
Line Width - 0.42mm
Layer Height - 0.20 - 0.25mm
Initial Layer Height - 0.15mm
Print Speed - Between 45mm/s to 60mm/s
Wall Settings - 1 wall
Top/Bottom Settings - Zero
Infill - Zero
Supports - Zero
Retract - On
Fan - On
Spiral Mode /Vase Mode: On
Skirt - 5 lines but it’s up to you, as long as the print head is well primed before starting on actual the part. Avoid using a brim because it’s more work to clean up and these parts are more delicate. Unless bed adhesion is a problem...
Skirt Offset: 1mm
Note: If using Cura slicer, set special mode to β€˜Surface Mode’.
