3D model description

I wanted to design a piece of furniture that was 100% 3D printed and easy to print. To me in 3D printing, easy means no assembly and no raft & support material so with this in mind, I thought it would be fun to design a furniture for small children. As an inspiration, I’ve always liked the small children furniture at IKEA especially the cute proportions and soft look of the MAMMUT series designed by M Kjelstrup & A Östgaard. The MAMMUT children’s stool was a good benchmark so I matched the stool’s overall height (11 3/4") which fits my 3D printer that has a maximum build height of 12”. These days, 3D printers are going bigger in the print volume so many makers can easily do a full scale, single-part print of my design.

For the design, I wanted the LiL STOOL to fit within the family of the MAMMUT series but avoid the shapes already being used like circles and soft squares. I decided to go with a pentagon shape but softened the five points so it’s friendly for children to sit on, hold, and carry. To add more fun and character to the design, I twisted the body so it has a spiral look. For my 3D print, I chose a bright, light blue filament that works well with the MAMMUT series color palette. I also rendered the LiL STOOL in other playful colors to show how fun the design can really be.

After I 3D printed the LiL STOOL, I brought it to IKEA and took photos of it with the MAMMUT series. I thought the LiL STOOL looked so cute next to other small furniture and the design fit perfectly with the family.
