Description

Lesson plan is among the .stl files, and it is the only .pdf.

This is a small table, designed to test the strength of small structures.  A cam, powered by a small gearmotor, moves around the top tray at high speeds, putting stress on a structure resting on top.

Parts required for assembly:

  • 730 RPM Motor from Servocity: https://www.servocity.com/730-...
  • Clamping Hub (4 mm shaft): https://www.servocity.com/770-...
  • x2 10-24 bolts, 1.5 in. long, and nuts (locknuts or nylon nuts preferable, but not necessary)
  • x2-4 6-32 bolts, 1/2 in. long (no nuts; the hub is tapped)
  • Battery (up to 12 V) and wires; a switch is handy, but not needed with long wires.
  • x2 Case Halves
  • x2 Motor Clamps
  • x1 Shake Disc
  • x1 Shake Tray

To assemble, align the 2 case halves.  Put the motor clamps in place and insert the 10-24 bolts, but do not tighten down the nuts. Insert the motor (you might want to attach wires before this) until the output shaft is through the hole in the case halves and has bottomed out.  Tighten down the 10-24 bolts.  Attach the clamping hub to the motor; the flat side should point away from the motor.  Screw the cam onto the hub with the 6-32 bolts; tighten them down (some threadlocker would not go to waste here). Place the shake tray over the cam.  It will be off-center.

TLDR: Assemble according to the CAD assembly; the yellow circle is the clamping hub.

To prepare a building, cut out a 105 mm x 105 mm piece of foamboard (such as this: https://www.dollartree.com/Rea...).  Attach the building to be tested to the foamboard firmly, so force can be transferred (hot glue works wonders here); you may only be able to attach one building ever to a plate, so consider it a consumable.  To run a test, turn on the power and watch it shake!
