3D model description

This is a project done by two students for an Engineering and Design fair. They went to regional and state with this project. Their abstract is below:

"The researchers used 3D Slicer computer software to create and print 3D models from one researcher’s CT scan. Two building procedures were used to create 3D models. Building procedure 1, the seed planting method, was more tedious and less accurate. Building procedure 2, the shifting display preset method produced better results. The model made from this second method was used as the example in the survey. The responses of the survey support the purpose of the project – to determine if respondents think 3D models of medical scans would improve their understanding of their anatomy. The medical professionals have a higher average understanding of the physician’s explanation because of their medical backgrounds, meaning that they would be more likely to understand a medical image compared to a typical patient. This result was expected, and therefore reinforces the fact that the audience that would benefit from having the 3D models, the people without medical backgrounds, are more interested in the model; however, because the medical professionals still maintained a high average, they also recognize the potential benefit the models could bring. Therefore, 3D modeling of medical images would benefit all of society by improving the doctor-patient relationship and overall patient healthcare."

They used the program 3D Slicer to prepare the CT scan to print. They used Microsoft Model Repair and Meshmixer in post processing.
