3D model description

This is a 3D fractal sculpture with a distinctly organic look and feel. In your mind's eye it could be an exotic shell from unexplored seas, a mysterious magical talisman...or maybe it's just an interesting chunk of eye-candy. :) Feathery shapes fanning out along the top and bottom edges, swirling into graceful forms closer to the center.

This was created using 3D fractal software. Just a few fairly simple algorithms can produce an endless variety of surprisingly organic shapes. It's possible to go spelunking in that Mandelverse, grab a few interesting shapes, and bring em out into the real world. Here are some tutorials I made that show most of that process: https://youtu.be/Kpu-DZs9HXU

This is my submission for the #POLYMAKERCHALLENGE

3D printing settings

This is a solid model and should re-size well. I've printed this file in PLA in just about every size - from a tiny one 35mm across all the way up to a huge, multi-piece print over 400mm.

The full version will need supports - lots of em. :) Not an easy print. I had good luck using Cura's Tree supports. The full version is slightly flat on the 'bottom' in hopes of keeping it stuck to the build plate. The first few millimeters can be tricky with many small areas on the plate. The split version is much easier to print, but still has some overhang that will need support.
