Der Mond geht auf, nun eilt zuhauf, schaut an das alte Wunder! Und hat er seine Pflicht getan dann geht er wieder unter.
Verrauscht der Tanz, der Talmiglanz
der Schärpe war beschlagen. Auf dem Altar des Vaterlands lag nur ein leerer Magen.
Die Not war groß, der Hintern bloß,
der Wind blies täglich trüber. Da kam der liebe Mond herauf, und alles war vorüber.

Schaut an die Pracht der deutschen Nacht: es rauchen alle Essen.
Auf dem Altar liegt mild bewacht
der Blankoscheck fürs Fressen.
Wie schön gebläht der Mond dort steht, die Schärpe frisch gewaschen. Und wird sie euch zum Strick gedreht,
dann jammert nicht, ihr Flaschen!
