3D model description

A three piece coordinate motion puzzle which assembles into a rhombic dodecahedron. I discovered this puzzle in 2014. One interesting aspect is that the three pieces are not identical.

The diameter of the final rhombic dodecahedron (face to opposite face distance) is 50.3 mm and the edge length is 30.8 mm. This was chosen to match the wood version I have. I also made a cube version by truncating the rhombic dodecahedron. This shortens the coordinate motion and the puzzle is looser. I do not include stl files for this version but you can see it in my photos (red PLA).

Print two copies of the "Orchid" piece and one copy of the "Hio" piece (Hole-In-One). The fit of this puzzle is critical. The offset needs to be small enough that the puzzle is not loose, yet large enough so it can actually be assembled. The best value will depend on your printer. I include pieces at offset 20, 50 and 100 (microns). For my printer the best fit is obtained using two "Orchid" pieces with offset 50, and one "Hio" piece with offset 20.

Caution: if you rescale these pieces the offset will also be rescaled. If you make it smaller, for example, it may not go together (offset too small).
