3D model description

Tessellating turtles! Turtle Tessellation with Box is an original design shared exclusively on Cults. Custom box included along with models for single-color and multi-color printing.

I am excited to share this design based on a hexagon with rotation.

Box Included with Download
The box holds 19 turtles (or more if printing turtles with only shell stripes). The lid may be printed plain with single extrusion or include the turtle design for two, three, or four colors. See screenshots for ideas.

3D Printing Suggestions

  • Single Extrusion: Print the “Together” model for a nice one-color print. Or use “Body Flat” and “Stripes Top” for a one-color print without the shell filled in. This is great for 3D pen coloring!
  • Single Extrusion with Filament Swap: Use “Together” model (or “Body Flat” + “Stripes Top”) and swap filament after 2mm for the shell. Or do a second swap at 3 mm to have the final inner shell parts a different color for the very top.
  • Single Extrusion and Markers or 3D Pen: Print with one-color as described above and use markers or a 3D pen to color and decorate. Great project for kids!
  • Dual Extrusion: Use the “Body” model and the “Eyes and Stripes” models together. Including the “Shell” model is optional depending on the look you want. Markers or a 3D pen could also be used after the print for some extra fun and color.
  • Palette/MMU Print: Use multi-color printing for turtles with two-color shells. Turtle “Body” model along with the “Eyes and Stripes” and “Shell.”
  • Duplication Mode: Print single-color elephants twice as fast.
  • Mix and Match!

3D printing settings

Approximate Dimensions:
Turtle Tile: 68 x 69 x 3.5 mm
Box Bottom: 78 x 79 x 78 mm
Box Lid: 81 x 82 x 16 mm
Note: There is 0.6 mm perimeter gap between box and lid in the model. Also, the models for the tiles have 0.2 mm gap when put together.

I printed mine with 0.3 mm layer height and enough solid layers that they are essentially 100% infill. No raft. No supports.
