3D model description

Scale reproduction of the Venus of Arles, the original of which is in the Louvre Museum. It is sculpted in Himeto marble and dates from the end of the first century BC.

It may be a copy of Praxiteles' Aphrodite of Thespias, commissioned by the courtesan Frine. In the 2nd century AD, Pausanias mentioned the existence in Thesspias (Boeotia, central Greece) of a group composed of Cupid, Frine and Aphrodite.the Praxitelian style can be found in the resemblance of the head to that of Aphrodite Cnidea (definitely a work by Praxiteles). In an attempt to reconstruct her career, the original Aphrodite of Thespias would be a work of youth (360 BC), if we choose to believe that this partially covered woman (often repeated in the Hellenistic period: see for example the Venus de Milo) is a prelude to the complete nude that was her Aphrodite Cnidea of approximately 350 BC.
