3D model description

Update: 24Dec2020: I updated the lid so that the pin is built in. It works MUCH better. Although the pins wouldn't quite fall out, they would come out a little bit over time. These look much cleaner, and fit much more easily. I wouldn't reprint just to have it, but if are printing the lid, don't use the original one. Use the 'V2PegsBuiltIn' version. I also loosed the tolerance on that peg compared to the old pegs because it doesn't need to 'lock' into place like the old pins. I'm leaving the old one just in case someone needs it.

And on the new lid, I printed it with 10mm pegs, and for one of them, the lid broke since you have to bend it slightly. I think the filament I was using was just a little bit brittle. Anyways, I shorted them to 7mm. Shouldn't make any difference in functionality since it should have almost no chance of coming out, but should be easier to put in. The old lid also needed supports for the hinge area, but it's a little more important on this one since the pins stick out perpendicularly.

NOTE: I printed this using the clear PLA from Solutech. It looks really good in real life, but doesn't look as good in the pictures because you can see the infill showing through. I included some shots of the 3D render so you can get a better idea of what it looks like.

If you also want an organizer that lets you fit into one box all the stuff from the Base game, Seafarers Expansion, and the 5-6 Player extensions for both, then check out my other design:

It looks like the GIF isn't loading in Cults, so here's the video of it in action. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ch2c--Bma_8

I designed this player tray so you can have all your pieces from Catan base and the Seafarers Extension neatly in front of you and to make cleanup a lot easier. No more shoving the pieces into tiny baggies. Here are the features I designed it with:

  • All 39 pieces for a player fit nicely into the tray, and they will stay there with the lid closed, but they are also easy to remove when open.

  • Tabs on the hinges so the lid stays at a good angle when flipping it open.

  • The player card fits perfect into the lid, which has a couple of slits in the corner so you can see the color of the pieces in the tray without opening it. And because the card is now in the lid, there should be virtually no wear and tear on it from people handling it.

  • I made it so the height is around 25mm with the lid on it. The inside of the box is a tiny bit higher than 75mm, which means that these tray will fit perfectly into the box when stacked 3 high.

  • The length and width was also designed so that you can place 3 of them side by side to span the entire box.

  • The reason for the above 2 features is that I'm working on designing an organizer that will allow you to neatly fit 6 of these player trays, along with everything from the base game + 5/6Player Extension, and Seafarers Expansion + 5/6Player Extension all into the box for the base game, and trays for the resource/development cards.

3D printing settings

I just used 2 bottom/top layers and 2 walls with 15% infill for everything, and it turned out great. Be sure to turn on ironing and it will look amazing since there are so many flat surfaces.

You will need to flip the lid over in your slicer. The only thing that needs supports is the lid and it only needs it on the area below the hing holes and under the 2 tabs that hold the player card. I would recommend using support blockers everywhere else it might put supports just to reduce cleanup time and plastic waste.

You will also need to print 2 hinge clips.

Total print time at 60mm/s was right around 6 hours when I printed all 4 things together.
