3D model description

I used the versatile Autodesk Fusion 360 to edit the topographic files I downloaded, giving them matching sizes and optimizing for 3d printing. Everest. Aconcagua. Denali. Kilimanjaro. Elbrus. Vinson. Puncak Jaya.

These are the Seven Summits, the highest peak on every continent, testaments to the dance of tectonic plates and molten rock that defines the surface structure of our miraculous planet.

It's not difficult to imagine why summiting each of these peaks is a highly coveted achievement in mountaineering: conquering these beasts seems to be a defiance of nature's supremacy over mankind, though these mountains will endure long after any trace of humanity has been wiped from the Earth. Since climbing each of the Seven Summits is unrealistic for the majority of people, these miniatures can give you a different kind of conquest over the mountains. Holding Everest in your hand is a very cool experience, even if it's tiny and made of plastic.

Each of these seven miniatures, which I generated at https://touchterrain.geol.iastate.edu and edited in Autodesk Fusion 360, shows one of the Seven Summits, is scaled to emphasize each mountain's beauty, and includes on the bottom the peak's name, the continent on which it's located, and the elevation of the summit in meters. The relative heights of each miniature are scaled exactly to the relative heights of the actual peaks. There's also a holder to keep them all organized, or you can print an individual miniature that has meaning for you. The miniatures in the files each have a diameter of 50 mm, but I scaled mine down to 75% of that and used a 0.25 mm nozzle, which gave me wonderful results.

3D printing settings

No supports. Small nozzle recommended—I used a 0.25mm nozzle with matte PLA filament and it resulted in great detail.
