Summary

Over the last years we had some pretty hot and dry summers.
Each evening my vegetable plants looked like they haven't been watered since a week.
To solve this issue for the next time, I've tried to create PET-bottle adapters to easily build drip irrigation systems for single plants.

While trying to design well working adapters I created 10 versions overs the last weeks to try out different attempts.
Now I got 4 final versions I would like to call usefull:

Version 1

  • hose needed
  • print PET adapter top side down, so you won't need supports
  • print valve case on the side, so you won't need supports (also increases strength)

Version 2:

  • hose needed
  • supports will be needed for the PET adapter
  • print valve case on the side, so you won't need supports (also increases strength)

Version 3:

  • no hose needed, but can be used (picture is outdated, changed the nozzle to an hose adapter instead)
  • supports will be needed for the PET adapter
  • valve screw can be printed top side down without supports (sideways with clean supports will increase strength instead)
  • sealing ring will be needed for valve screw

Version 4:

  • hose not needed - but it works best with hose & drip nozzle
  • supports will be needed for the PET adapter
  • valve screw can be printed top side down without supports (sideways with clean supports will increase strength instead)
  • sealing ring will be needed for valve screw

General assembly:

Currently using 1L cola bottles (because they're pretty durable) - other PET bottles should work also.

All PET adapters are designed to be sealed either with a good sealing ring or with water resistent glue (e.g. epoxy 2 component glue) or silicon.

All hose adapters are designed for an hose with 6mm inner diameter - best with a drip nozzle. Print upside down so you won't need supports.

To fixate the hose near the plant, I created a short & a long earth clip pin and one clip fixation you can screw into wood e.g. - I prefer the long earth clip pins.

I tested several ways of sealing and different models over the last weeks, but my personal favorite is version 1.
It's easy to print, uses the least material and the "inner tower" within the bottle neck allows easy glueing.

Printed all models in PLA with 80% infill to make them durable.
Printed the valves of V1 & V2 on 100% infill.
Didn't test ABS - to be honest, haven't tried this material at all yet ^^"

Credits:

Thanks "DmeTrue" for the valve - used it for V3 & V4.
I learned how to create threads later during this project.

The drip nozzle of "MrGemeco" also is great to prevent dirt/insects within the hose - thank you!

And of course the most important base object of this project was the PET cap made by "sirmiro" - thank you, this object inspired this project (:

Enjoy and if you like the models, please share a make!
In case other hose diameters should be needed, drop me a comment - I will try to create them later.

Updates:

24.06.2020
Added "V1_V2_Valve_Block_Simple.stl"
Tested the adapter with a harder hose and the valve did not close the hose enough.
The block between the hose and valve screw ensure the hose is flattened enough to prevent flow or regulate to only minor dripping.
