3D model description

This model was rendered using MATLAB R2016a on the ICQ model of the PSI made by Peter Thomas from the data of the Galileo mission. It is the first model I have made using a new kind of interpolation. Instead of the usual azimuthal vs elevation matrix (spherical coordinates), I used a coordinate system transformation into the equivalent of a disassembled equiradial tetrahedron. This new interpolation makes the distance between two neighbour points in the interpolation matrix to be nearly the same distance in any latitude and longitude. In the azimuthal-elevation matrix, on the proximity to the poles, two neighbour points of the same elevation are closer to each other than two of them near the equator. The file's names explained: name_1_x_10_y.stl is 1 : x * 10y. So _1_6_10_7 is 1:600000000 or one in 60 million.

951 Gaspra

Gaspra is a small asteroid, member of the Flora family, imaged by the Galileo probe in its way to Jupiter. This family, as well as all asteroid families, is the result of ejected material from a colission of the main member of the family, 8 Flora, with a smaller object. This family is thought to be the source of the asteroid (or asteroids) that impacted the Earth 65 mya, leaving the Chicxulub crater and triggering the K/T event (in which the non-avian dinosaurs became extincs), and the impactor of the Tycho crater in the Moon, 108 mya; because of the close orbits of the family members, and the recent of its creation event. There could be other origin for those recent impactors, like comets or NEAs. Gaspra is unusual among close imaged asteroids in being relatively clear of big craters, probably because of the young family origin. Another unusual characteristic is the presence and abundance of regoliths, a "soil" of astronomical objects. Small objects tend to easily lose this substrate due to low of their mass and the effect of the sun erosion.
