OpenSCAD Customizer Options

This design has the following Customizer options:

General

  • Sphere_Diameter - Diameter of the sphere
  • Material_Thickness - Thickness of the material

Rings

  • Rings_Vertical - Number of vertical rings
  • Rings_Horizontal - Number of horizontal rings

Hole

  • Hole_Diameter - Diameter of the hole through the center
  • Central_Cylinder - Add a central cylinder?

You will need

You also will need:

  • 2x split rings (e.g. 15mm, 20mm or 25mm) - You can use a carabiner clip as well as (or instead of) the top split ring
  • 1x small rubber band, length of elastic, hair tie or something similar to thread through the toy and attach to the split rings
  • 1x accessory, such as a liberty bell (e.g. 30mm) or a mirror - these can be picked up from pet or craft stores, or you could salvage an accessory from another pet toy

Design Considerations

Consider adding a Central_Cylinder for easier printing and threading. If you choose not to add a Central_Cylinder, we recommend printing with tree supports.

Material

This design is perfect for printing in most filaments.

Versions

  • 1.0 (13 Apr 2021) - Initial version

Printing

Recommended slicer settings:

  • Resolution: 0.1mm - 0.2mm
  • Infill: ~50% recommended.
  • Supports: Yes. We recommend tree supports, especially if you chose not to add a Central_Cylinder.
  • Rafts: Possibly required to help tree supports adhere to the print bed.

Finishing

  1. Remove the outer support material
  2. Use long, thin tweezers to remove any remaining support material from inside the toy
  3. Use a deburring tool, small file and/or sand paper to remove any remaining support material
  4. Rinse with clean water to remove any plastic dust particles
  5. Once dry, check there are no rough edges. If there are, repeat the steps above.
  6. Thread the rubber band (of whatever you choose to attach the split rings) with something long and thin, such as a large needle, skewer or piece of wire. You may find it easier to thread some thin cotton through, first, and use it to pull the rubber band through.
  7. Attach a small accessory, such as a bell, to the lower split ring
  8. Consider attaching a carabiner clip to the top split ring for easier installation and removal
