Sa-mul-no-ri : The term samulnori refers to a form of nong-ak that was born in February 1978 at a small theater named Gonggan Sarang, when the theater staged a compilation of nongak rhythms using kkwaenggwari, janggu, buk, and jing, which are the four key percussion instruments played by nongak musicians. Samulnori concentrates on the playing of rhythm patterns, and while nongak is generally performed standing up samulnori is played sitting down. It was a new form of nongak featuring a totally new arrangement of nongak rhythm patterns which were played faster and faster to reach a frenzied climax, drawing an impassioned response from the audience.
