3D model description

Looking for a unique model to use for your custom Thomas the Tank Engine? or just want to make a small J50 for your fleet? I give you my Mini-J50 model that fits on a modified Bachmann Thomas Chassis for Ho/Oo scale.

I made this version after finishing my regular J50. I found that it was a little too large for what I was wanted, being a model interpreting the original toy of Thomas the Tank Engine the Rev. W. Awdry made for his son Christopher Awdry in 1945. after I finished this model I was very happy with it!

3D printing settings

this is printed in parts, in order for a complete model you will need
1X shell top
1X Smokebox door
1X Running Board
1X Motor mount Front & Back
1X Cab roof
4X buffers
then optional but helpful for assembly 1X Detail template.

this print at .15mm layer height could take about 6.5Hr's though I recommend a lower layer height for greater detail, as well as using support, but won't in areas with large overhang areas.

If your looking for a face to use there are many online. but for the one I used, you can find it on Thingiverse by maker Agebiz (https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2331999). download the "thomas_body.STL" file and slice the face-off using your slicer software or 3d file editor. you can then fuse this to the Smokebox door face blank if you wish to use them.

as a side note, the Smokebox door face blank files can be used to create swappable parts you can add new faces or parts on.

when it comes to the Bachmann Thomas Chassis, all that needs to be modified is the motor housing, after removing the mounding screw mounts that go into the top shell of the model cut along the middle of the screw mount, and keep the side with the motor.

To help hold the motor in place use the Motor mount back and glue one side of the motor mount to it. the Motor mount should be printed in a heat-resistant filament or material such as ABS to prolong the life of your model for the motor mounts.

something I recommend is you glue the Motor mount front to the Running board, this will help keep the model together. I recommend using tape to protect the chassis then screw the front mount on and then add the running board. when everything is on use epoxy or another gell like adhesive to make the two parts one.

when you go to assemble the model, insert cut paper clips into most of the holes in the running board. the paper clips should be about .9mm in diameter. they are used as a guide for putting the top on, it will also help hold the buffers on. though you will want to use Super Glue to keep the cut paper clips.

paper clips are also used for details. though if you got other items you want to use for it go for it! I used paper clips for the handrails and the hook couplings.

the hook couplings can be done in two ways. 1) simple hook in one of the holes, or 2) a more complex design, bend one in a curve and put in the bottom and one in a 90-degree bend and put it in the top hole with the bent part facing downward. you can then add a chain before gluing everything together. it would then be permanent and stay on the model.

As an option, you can use smaller wheels on the Bachmann Thomas chassis. this will require modification of the bottom plate for clearance with other sections of track.
