The horse (Equus ferus caballus or Equus caballus) is a large, herbivorous, ungulate mammal with a single hoof and is one of the species of the family Equidae, which evolved over the last 45-55 million years from a small, multi-toed mammal. In their natural state, horses live in herds, usually under the leadership of a single breeding stallion. They are social and rely on their speed to escape predators. With a good sense of balance, a strong instinct to escape and great spatial visualization skills, they possess an unusual trait in the animal kingdom, being able to go into a light sleep while standing. The females, named mares, give birth after eleven months of gestation to a youngster called a foal, capable of standing up and running shortly after birth.

The horse is domesticated by humans. Its use spreads to all of Eurasia from the highest antiquity. Although almost all horses are now domesticated, there are populations of domesticated horses that have returned to the wild including Przewalski's horse. A vast specialized vocabulary has developed to describe horse-related concepts. This lexicon ranges from anatomy and morphology to life stages, color, breeds, locomotion and behavior. Most domestic horses are trained for riding or pulling between the ages of two and four. They reach their full development at an average of five years of age. Their life expectancy at birth is twenty-five to thirty years.

For centuries, horses have served humans by selecting different breeds for traction, agriculture, warfare, and saddling. Horses allow the development of trade and the expansion of civilizations over large areas. During the colonization of the Americas, the species was reintroduced on this continent. Considered as "the noblest conquest of Man", present in myths, religions, encyclopedias and all forms of art, the horse is, of all animals, the one that has most marked the history and progress of humanity. Professions are linked to its maintenance, its trade and to sporting, equestrian and equestrian activities. In most developed countries, horses are now ridden for leisure or sport. It can be a therapy partner, and tends to be closer to the pet. It produces consumer goods through its meat, milk, leather and urine. In other countries, the horse remains indispensable for agriculture and transportation. The maintenance of domestic horses requires special equipment and the attention of specialists.
