3D model description

Main purpose is to be a weatherproof, maybe even deep water proof housing for a USB camera. Space inside perfectly fits a basic no brand 1080p USB webcam. The space is also big enough to fit a Raspberry Pi Zero W or 2 W with a camera module and a 18650 battery. I will include a model of the housing without the back cutout for this particular webcam. It's easy to make a hole if needed in your slicer and seal with a spot of exterior silicone.

No Supports Needed.

The front body has a space for a 1.5" (3.8 cm) acrylic disk which is epoxied in place with a lens bumper ring on top. The very back of the housing was modeled out to cup the back of the camera casing, with a small hole just big enough to run the cable through. The cam in the photos is a basic no brand 1080p 30fps USB webcam from amazon, where the acrylic disk are also affordable. Links at the bottom.

Running the cable through is simple, the camera casing only has two screws keeping it closed and two screws holding the board into place. The USB cable unplugs easily from the camera control board. The housing model has a small hole just big enough to fit the plug through the 4mm wall. Push the cable plug through the wall and plug it back into the control board and close up the casing. The casing only has two screws keeping it closed and two screws holding the board into place. The hole space available in the back of the housing will be filled in with an exterior silicone.

3D printing settings

The main body of the housing is printed with PETG at 0.2mm layer height at 255C with the bed at 85C, to get strong layer adhesion. The internal layout is a 3 wall perimeter at 25% infill on a Prusa MK3 0.4mm nozzle, shock absorbing and limits fractures. Printing in stronger materials and coating the parts may be needed if you plan on submerging in deep waters.

The gasket is printed out of TPU at 0.2mm layer height at 245C with 100% circular infill, strong layer adhesion and aligning the gasket grain with the housing grain. The gasket space in the housing is 2mm wide and 2mm total depth. The gasket size is 1.8mm wide and 2mm depth. With 3D printing we know that a 2mm space will not fit a 2mm wide printed slot. So the gasket is pressed down to be thinner than 2mm, causing the width of the gasket to expand and fit snuggly against the walls, always under the pressure of the screws holding down. With the pressure and aligned grain of the gasket with the housing gasket walls, you get a respectable seal.
