I have finally combined two of my favorite things...geared hinges and print-in-place designs :)

With a lot of trial and error I have come up with a box that prints in place, is completely self-supported, and has a robust hinge mechanism.

All you have to do is print it with the flat side down, slowly work the hinge closed and open a few times and you're done.

The box measures ~11x4x5cm when closed and ~20cm long when printing. I designed all of the moving parts with a 0.4mm tolerance and should be easy to print on almost any FDM printer.

The box is a good size for small desktop items like paper clips or laundry money and it had a surprising fidget-toy effect.

3D printing settings

DO NOT USE SUPPORTS or BRIM!!!

The design incorporates two small supports ribs between the gears that will easily break away the first time you move the hinge. You may have to clean up these areas with a knife.

Print flat side down and do not use supports or a brim. I suggest to print with at least 3 walls, 5 bottoms/tops, 0.2mm layer height and 10% infill.
