Undines or Ondine are a type of water elementals. They could be found in ponds and near waterfalls. They could sing very beautifully, and their songs could sometimes be heard amid the rushing of the water. Ondyn include nereids, naiads and mermaids. Despite their humanoid qualities, they did not have a human soul, so to secure it, they had to marry a human. They shortened their lives on Earth, but they could enjoy the immortality of the human soul after death. Such a relationship was not without risk, however, because if the husband was unfaithful, he would be killed by ondin. The offspring of man and ondyna had a human soul. However, it had some peculiarities called "watermarks".

They first appeared in Paracelsus's alchemical works. Similar creatures, however, appear in classical literature, for example in Ovid's Metamorphoses. Later authors called them water nymphs, and this interpretation is still valid today.

According to Paracelsus, each of the four elements had spirits that lived in our world assigned to them. He bound ondins to water, to salamander's fire, to sylphs' air, and to gnomes to earth. He believed that they were an invisible element of the visible nature. Many of them took human forms and lived among humans, taking advantage of the fact that their senses were unable to grasp them.
