3D model description

This is a HOn30 Scale model railroad locomotive pilot and tender. It is modeled after the Vulcan Iron Works 2-6-0 42" gauge oil-fired steam locomotive #6 used by the Dismal Swamp Railroad of the Richmond Cedar Works in Norfolk County, VA, a railroad that ran from the 1890s until 1941.

It is designed to work with the Marsh Creek boiler and cab kit available on Shapeways (www.shapeways.com/product/E8HWZGSF2/hon30-0-6-0-2-6-2-conversion-kit). It employs Micro-Trains couplers front and rear. No shims are required for proper height. The tender reuses the original Bachmann trucks, wheels, and drawbar. Proper weighting is accomplished via the addition of weights inside the steam dome and tender (weights not included).

This model is split into multiple parts to constitute a kit requiring assembly, but also allowing for optimal detail by aligning with the build plate. Two versions of the tender are included with this model. One allows for the use of a Train-Tech SFX sound capsule (www.train-tech.com/index.php/sound/sfx-sound-capsules) or other electronics within the tender. Provisions are included for the use of a microswitch at the rear and 4-pin connector in the forward bulkhead. Acoustic ducts in the chassis amplify and emit the sound from the sound capsule. The second version is a hollow tender shell with a solid chassis. In both versions, the water fill spout at the rear of the tender lid serves as a pull handle for opening the tender lid which is hinged at the front of the tender deck. Some minor filing/fitting are required for the best fit.

This model prints well using a 0.25 mm nozzle in PLA, but will likely do well in resin, too. PLA parts can be joined with Plastruct Plastic Weld or Cyanoacrylate glue (e.g. "Super Glue" or "Krazy Glue").
