I'm a manager in the telCo industry. Like many people I had to work from home for several months. I am lucky enough to live in a house where I can work quite comfortably, but I missed a few things from my office.

My home desk is merely an Ikea tablet that slides out from an Ikea bookcase.
I work on a laptop and it fits; I can use a mouse but nothing else will fit.

I am used to plug an external monitor when I work in my company's premises, to extend my digital workspace. And my company office desk is wide, there is plenty of space for a monitor. But not here at home.

And I did not want the room to become a home office either. So I had two objectives :
* set up a monitor I can work with in the room I use to work from home
* find a way to make it disappear in seconds when I don't work

My first idea was to use the LCD display I scavenged from an old iMac, but I was not able to make the electronics work. So I bought a 15.6" Asus Zenscreen that is perfect for my project. It's lightweight, thin and works with only one USB cable.

Parts list:

  • PLA
  • M3 steel hexagon socket screws to attach the PLA pieces to the aluminium tubes
  • two 1-meter-long aluminium hollow tubes, 8mm diameter, 1mm thick, to cut small rods for the frame and arm
  • one M6 hexagon socket bolt and a compatible nut to attach the arm to the bookcase or whatever piece of furniture you want to attach it to
  • one 10x15x4mm ball bearing to smoothen the rotation of the arm (optional)

Tools needed:

  • a metal saw to cut the tubes
  • a power drill with a decent 2.5mm metal drill bit
  • small

The aluminium tubes:

WARNING: cutting metal with precision is not easy. At least for me. And depending on the quality of you printer, PLA, and the adjustments you made, you may encounter fitting problems. Take your time, measure twice before you cut, test before you drill, test before you screw.

You may use a power screwdriver but be gentle; walls are solid but plastic may break if you apply too much strength.
* you need four 172mm-long tubes that will attach the corners to the central disc,
* two 214mm-long tubes to vertically attach the corners on each side of the frame,
* one 90mm-long tube that will be the vertical axis, connecting the central disc to the arm,
* two more tubes for the arm; the size is up to you, it depends on your own setup (mine are 150mm-long).

You can use the DrillingTool I made specifically for this project to make sure you drill perfectly in the center of your tubes, at the right distance. The X-marked side is for the tubes that connect to the X-disc and the I-marked side is for the vertical tubes that connect the corners together. The depths of the sleebes are different. Again, check several times before you drill.
