Built around a serpentine line, in an unfinished contraposto, La Méditation originates from a figure in the tympanum of The Gates of Hell, inspired by Michelangelo. It was later included in the Monument to Victor Hugo and enlarged under the title Voix intérieure. It represented one of the poet's inspiring muses. In order to insert her in the monument, Rodin deprived her of her arms and amputated part of her legs. Isolated from this context, it was resumed in this way and exhibited in Dresden and Stockholm in 1897, but was misunderstood by the public, because of its incomplete appearance.

It is, however, a work dear to Rodin, for which Rilke gave the following interpretation: 'We are surprised to see that the arms are missing. Rodin experienced them in this case [...] as something that did not fit with the body that wanted to envelop itself [...] The same is true of Rodin's statues without arms; they lack nothing necessary. One is in front of them as in front of a whole, completed and which does not admit any complement".
