3D model description

[ If you have any trouble accessing the kit on Thingiverse, I've also published it to a Google Drive location: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1WPmede6jkyB-1rDndHsbDXet0fv1Uav2?usp=sharing ]

This is the fourteenth expansion parts kit meant to complement my original Star Trek Constitution Class Parts Kit (https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3652210). This kit includes my attempt to depict the screen-canon Oberth class, alongside popular fanon variants of the ship from Jackill’s (Eric Kristiansen) Starfleet Reference Manual: Ships of the Fleet Volume 1, Volume 2, and Volume 3, as well as Strategic Design’s (David Schmidt et al.) Starfleet Prototype and Starfleet Dynamics books.

See my Thingiverse Profile (https://www.thingiverse.com/CaptainMojo/designs) for the full list of parts kits I’ve released so far. All parts are meant to be cross-compatible between kits for your kitbashing enjoyment.

This kit supports the following Oberth variant ship classes:

Oberth class science ship

AKA the Garneau class (Starfleet Dynamics), the Gagarin and the Sagan classes
(FASA)

FASA game Stats

Introduced as the USS Grissom in Star Trek III, shortly before getting annihilated by Christopher Lloyd’s careless weapons officer, the Oberth class saw extensive screen time in The Next Generation.

Angueira class hospital ship

Source: Jackill’s Ships of the Fleet Volume 2

FASA game stats

The Angueira class is a medical ship / transport variant, with the Oberth’s secondary hull replaced with a rectangular medical module with extra shuttle capacity.

Clarke class clipper

Source: Starfleet Dynamics

FASA game stats

The Clark class replaces the Oberth Secondary hull with a third warp nacelle.

Fisher class transport

Source: Jackill’s Ships of the Fleet Volume 1

Similar to Franz Joseph’s Ptolemy class (and using the same cylindrical containers) the Fisher class replaces the Oberth secondary hull with a docking neck for connecting to containers. Kit includes a standalone ship, a ship carrying a starliner container, and versions containing one or two basic containers.

Greer class corsair

Source: Starfleet Prototype

FASA game
stats

The Greer class is a minimalist variant completely omitting the secondary hull.

Jester class corvette

Source: Jackill’s Ships of the Fleet Volume 2 (The Asmodeus class is an almost identical design in Starship Prototype)

FASA game stats

The Jester replaces the secondary hull with a Miranda style torpedo module.

Orca class gunboat

Source: Jackill’s Ships of the Fleet Volume 2

FASA game stats

The Orca removes the Oberth secondary, adds a third nacelle directly connected to the bottom of the primary hull, and adds Miranda-style mega-phasers.

Todega class tug

Source: Jackill’s Ships of the Fleet Volume 3

The Todega class adds additional warp and impulse units, and replaces the secondary hull with a tug module containing a powerful fore and aft tractor arrays.

Notes on scaling and working with Blender

Note there’s conflicting screen evidence of the Oberth class’ size. See the article on Ex Astris
Scientia
for a thorough discussion on the debate. I’m assuming a ~150 length.

My target scale for all source files and output STL files is 1:1000. Although these files have not been extensively tested through printing, they are intended to be resized to match common modelling and miniatures scales.

Target scale Scale STL files to: Notes
1/3900 0.25641026 (25.6%) FASA miniature scale
1/3788 0.26399155 (26.3) ADB Starline 2400 scale
1/3125 0.32 (32%) ADB Starline 2500 scale
1/2500 0.4 (40%) The Trek modelers "Golden scale"
1/1600 0.625 (62.5%) TOS 3-Ship Set scale
1/1400 0.714285714 (71.4%) Common resin model scale
1/650 1.538461538 (153.8%) Modelling scale
1/537 1.862197393 (186.2%) Common scale for TMP models
1/350 2.857142857 (285.7%) Large scale

Blender is free, which to be honest was the primary factor in my decision to learn it. There are many fine video and text tutorials available online if you're interested in learning more. See the Blender fundamentals tutorials playlist to get started.

You can use File -> Import -> Stl (.stl) and File -> Export -> Stl (.stl) to load or save STL files in blender.

Note: These kits were built using Blender 2.8.

Post-processing STL output

Although all of the STL files included have been tested as valid watertight meshes, joining the parts together and exporting new STL files can introduce small errors that may cause issues with slicing programs. I recommend any STL files you create are checked using a program like Netfabb Basic free edition. Doing a simple "Close All Holes" repair has fixed most of the issues I've run into so far. If you do run into issues with mesh quality, please let me know.

Parts list

The following lists provide a summary of the included parts. Parts are included in the ZIP file Oberth-Parts-STL-Files.zip.

For the majority of items, the mesh origin has been set so that when you import these objects into your 3D editor of choice, they are positioned as they would be on the sample ships provided.
