3D model description

These are parts of a DNA molecule designed to be assembled in Tinkercad. The helix, Adenine, Thymine, Guanine, and cytosine do have interlocking parts or flat joints, so students can fit them like a puzzle or have to figure out which pairs with which. If printed, it is meant to be printed as a single piece. Printing it in pieces means it will have to be glued. Comes with assembled model.

Activity:
1. Have students import selected models to tinkercad.com (I use Google classroom to post them, but if that is not an option for you message me and we can figure out other ways.)

  1. Have students choose a base and have them put their name on it using the text feature.

  2. Have them place the helix on the base and lock them in place.

  3. Have them put 4-5 base pairs on the helix.

It is recommended you do a lesson on the use of Tinkercad first. Have them make a name plate first to get used to the controls. Tinkercad also has some good build in lessons. Once they are set-up, it is a good longer term activity. Set-up one Tinkercad account for the class or have them use individual accounts and set-up classes in Tinkercad. Have fun. I've included a PDF file in the downloads that walks students through the lesson.

3D printing settings

This is a challenging file to print and works beast in resin. FDM requires a ridiculous number of supports. Best as a digital project. If printed in resin use the "supports everywhere" option. If printing in FDM temp 205, speed 50mm/s, layer height .17
