3D model description

Another version of a clod mold: https://cults3d.com/en/3d-model/tool/moule-a-mottes

Creation of a 7.5 cm clod mold, for the realization of seedlings, cuttings or transplanting.

You have a mold 1 clod in 7.5 x 7.5 x 7.5 cm in 2 parts:

  • A mold,

  • A mold remover.

~ Realization of the Mottes ~

To do this you will need:

  • Fairly fine potting soil (available at garden centers),

  • Water (180 ml for a root ball!),

  • And your fingers! (^.^)

1/ Install the moulder in the mould,

2/ Fill with potting soil about halfway. Potting soil that you

you will have previously well "broken" and stirred to avoid pieces!

3/ Pack as needed with 2-3 fingers starting with the corners, then pack following the edges and the middle to finish.

The soil should be packed down enough to stand afterwards without breaking! (But not too much either to allow the roots to spread!)

4/ Repeat step 3 until you reach the height of your mold.

5/ Take your 180ml of water (personally I use a 20ml syringe), and drizzle the water gently along the edges of the mold and continue by making circles progressively to the center.

Repeat the step until you use up your 180ml. Take a break every now and then so the water can drain out!

6/ Let your clump rest for 10-15 minutes in its mold, then turn it over. Place your thumb and forefinger on the legs of the mold release, and lift the mold to get your clump out. Remove the moulder, and voilà...

3D printing settings

The parts are in the direction of printing.

Since I'm printing PLA and using water to make the divots, I print both parts at 100% fill so I don't have any issues with waterproofing or seepage.

For the mold :

The pattern should be printed with a "concentric" first layer fill.

The first layer should also be printed slowly! 10 mm/s.

For the de-moulder, consider the supports :

  • In contact with the tray,

  • Support pattern: grid,

  • Density of the support: 25%,

  • X/Y distance of supports: 1.0mm.

To remove the supports and not break the vertical tabs (considering the printing direction of the layers), use the tip of a knife or a flat screwdriver, and slightly lever between the support and the horizontal part of the tabs! It will then work by itself!
