Batman is the secret identity of Bruce Wayne, a wealthy American playboy, philanthropist, and industrialist who resides in Gotham City. Batman's origin story features him as he vows vengeance against criminals after witnessing the murder of his parents Thomas and Martha Wayne as a child, a vengeance tempered by an ideal of justice. He trains physically and intellectually, creates a bat-inspired character to strike fear into criminals, and controls the streets of Gotham at night.
