The history and meaning of the trinity knot is often debated, especially since it holds meaning for both Christians and non-Christians alike.

The trinity knot is also called a triquetra. Christians believe that the three points of the Irish trinity knot represent the three elements of the holy trinity: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Pagans (with related beliefs to the Celts) see the trinity knot as a representation of the natural forces – earth, air, and water.

The trinity knot has also been known to symbolize life, death, and rebirth. Other groups and people offer additional meanings for the Irish trinity knot, all of which reference three separate entities having influence upon one another.

In terms of history, Christians feel that the Irish trinity knot started with the Monks, who brought the trinity knot design along with Christianity converting the Celts. However, there is a strong possibility that original Irish knotwork symbols, including the Irish trinity knot, are actually Celtic in origin, given their similar looks to other known Celtic art and craft. Sometimes, the traditional triquetra symbol is accompanied by a circle. The circle can be interpreted as a symbol of eternity, whether that be the eternity of God’s love or the eternal circle of life.
