Hansel, a little boy, and his younger sister Gretel are the children of a poor woodcutter. Fearing starvation, the woodcutter's wife - the children's stepmother - convinces him to lose them in the forest. Hansel and Gretel hear his plan and, collecting small white pebbles, mark the way home; thus the attempt to lose them fails. However, the stepmother pushes the father to try again, and this time, the two children only have pieces of bread to throw behind them. Once abandoned in the middle of the forest, they realize that the bread has been eaten by birds.

Wandering in the forest, Hansel and Gretel find a house made of bread (later versions will speak of gingerbread) with windows made of sugar, which they begin to eat. The inhabitant of the house, an old woman, invites them and prepares a feast for them. However, the old woman is a witch who built the house to lure children in order to eat them. She locks Hansel in a cage, and makes Gretel her servant.

According to the classification of fairy tales by Aarne and Thompson, Hansel and Gretel is placed in type AT 327A, to which it gives its name, "Hansel and Gretel", and type AT 1121, "Burning the witch in her own oven" (Tales of the Ogre or the Devil fooled group). The tale type AT 327 "The Children and the Ogre" also includes the type AT 327B "The Dwarf and the Giant", which includes Perrault's tale Little Thumb.
