3D model description

The Battle of Okinawa, codenamed Operation Iceberg, was fought on the island of Okinawa in the Ryukyu Islands and was the largest amphibious assault in the Pacific Theater.67 It was fought for 82 days, from early April to mid-June 1945.

The battle has been referred to as Typhoon of Steel (English: Typhoon of Steel), and Rain of Steel (Tetsu no ame) or Violent Wind of Steel (Tetsu no Bofu) in Japanese. These designations refer to the ferocity and brutality of the fighting, the intensity of the gunfire, and the sheer number of Allied ships and armored vehicles that assaulted the island. The battle proved to be one of the heaviest casualties, civilian and military, in the entire Pacific campaign. The total number of casualties exceeded a quarter of a million. Five divisions of the U.S. XXIV Corps, the 7th, 27th, 77th, 81st and 96th, and two Marine divisions, the 1st and 6th, fought on the island, while the 2nd Marine Division was held in reserve and was not considered for landing. The invasion was supported by naval, amphibious and tactical air forces.
