3D model description

A fully playable, portable and easily 3D-printable Gungi board and set of pieces from the anime/manga, HunterxHunter.

The board and pieces have spaces to insert 6mmx2mm magnets so that pieces satisfyingly snap into place and not topple over when stacking, creating a mess that can disturb play. Board features a working drawer that also has slots for magnets so that the drawer stays open during play to place capture pieces, and once the game is over stays close to ensure pieces remain stowed away. File also includes a PDF file with all the instructions and rules for playing Gungi!

The board, pieces require 6mmx2mm neodymium magnets. 16 for the 2 drawers, 81 for the board and
76 for all of the pieces, a total of 173 magnets.

I highly recommend buying 2 larger magnets, taping them down, making sure they have opposite polarities, to the underside of a table or surface you are going to work on, this way you can glue all the magnets quickly whilst ensuring the correct polarity. Always double check to be sure you are gluing the magnets in the right polarity.

Gungi Table Assembly

The Drawer, DrawerKnob, and BoxBody files, need to be printed twice to make a complete box. The TableTop file needs to be printed as one object. After printing all the models, Do a dry test with the TableTop sealing everything to make sure they can open and close properly before gluing anything.

Once you made sure everything fits and works correctly, glue the magnets to the TableTop, making sure to have consistent polarity so that the top part, where you can't see the magnet, is ATTRACTING pieces. Also remember to glue the magnets to the BoxBodies and the Drawers, again making sure you have right polarity. After all the magnets are glued, insert the two Drawers inside the box body. After the Drawers are inserted, apply glue to the BOX BODY, not the Drawers, then align the TableTop to the BoxBody and press down to glue everything together. Move the Drawers to avoid accidental gluing incase some of the glue squeezed out and got on the drawers.

Gungi Pieces Assembly

For the pieces, print 38 instances of the OuterCircle file in black and 38 more in white. To have good stacking, make sure your nozzle isn't too close to the bed, as any kind of elephants foot greatly impacts quality of the pieces, I personally used a CRTouch and set the offset so that it barely stuck to the bed. I lost quite a few pieces but the ones that made it stacked very nicely.

After that, print 72 instances of the BottomInnerCircle file in white, this is the part that will hold the magnet. Once you print all 72, you then can print the symbols for each piece. Since there are a lot of unique symbols and each has to be printed a specific number of times, pay attention to the following list:

Here are the unique pieces included and how many need to be printed:

Print 1 of:
- 帥 - King/Marshal

Print 2 of:
- 馬 - Knight/Cavalry
- 忍 - Spy/Shinobi
- 弓 - Archer
- 砲 - Cannon
- 筒 - Musketeer
- 砦 - Fort
- 中 - Duke/Lieutenant General
- 謀 - Counsel
- 侍 - Samurai

Print 4 of:
- 小 - Captain/Major General

Print 6 of:
- 大 - Prince/General

Print 9 of:
- 兵 - Soldier/Pawn

For high quality pieces, I recommend going to your slicer and adding a pause at height script so that the printer pauses after reaching the layer right before the actual Kanji symbols, that way when the printer pauses, you can switch from white filament to black filament, so you can get the black symbols on a white background. The pieces look very nice when done this way.

After printing all of the parts for the pieces, remember to separate all the symbols so that half are for white and half for black. To assemble the pieces, take the OuterCircle piece and apply a small amount of super glue to the inside face, then take a BottomInnerCircle piece and press it in, push as much as you can since there is no need to worry about the piece passing through as the OuterCircle piece has a chamfer at the bottom preventing that.

After gluing the BottomInnerCircle, add a drop of super glue to the center slot and place a magnet, always ensuring consistent polarity. then take one of the pieces with the symbol, add a drop of super glue and glue it on top of the BottomInnerCircle, sealing the magnet inside. You now have a finished Gungi piece, now repeat that 71 more times.
